So that's Kurokawa. Contrary to many other onsen hotspots, Kurokawa isn't as overdeveloped and offers a much more natural experience. It's not the only town like this in Japan by a long shot, but this place is relatively easy to access and there are lots of small ryokan to choose from (and one or two big ones). It also offers many places to try their onsen only, so you don't need to stick with the onsen at your accommodation.
