Hyōsetsu no Mon

Gate of Ice and Snow. Otherwise known as 氷雪の門 or Hyōsetsu no Mon. The gate was erected in 1958 in spirit of the many who died in the battle at Sakhalin Island during World War II, when the island was called 樺太 or Karafuto, in the former Karafuto prefecture. Every year, a memorial service is held on 20 August by the people of Wakkanai to commemorate this loss.
