The cat shrine, or 猫神社 (Nekojinja) was originally erected after an incident. You see, cats were brought to the island to help get rid of the mice that were attacking the local silk worm production. So the islanders loved having these cats around. But one day, a fisherman causes the premature demise of one feline. The villagers felt so sorry, that they built Nekojinja, and enshrined the unlucky little one here.
