Most of the walking trails along the Shiretoko Five Lakes is like this. Alternating between wooden paths, earthen trails, and natural stone stairs. It's not easy to traverse for the not so able bodied. So there is also a shorter version of the walking trail, but it doesn't lead along all the five lakes.
