Shiretoko Five Lakes (知床五湖, shiretoko-goko) is known for harbouring brown bears in the wild, and this area is a place where they live. Before entering these grounds, you're supposed to watch a small lecture on how to deal with bears, should you encounter one. So here, we are standing at the fifth lake (五湖, goko), which is the first along the walking trail.
