Overview

The Sōtō Zen Buddhist temple, Bodai-ji (菩提寺), was founded in 862 AD by Ennin, the monk seeking out out the location of Buddhist Hell. This place, Osorezan, fit the bill so perfectly, that he built a temple here to claim the land, and dedicate to the souls trying to cross the Sanzu river in order to reach Buddhist Paradise.
