This is the main attraction in a small city called Noboribetsu (登別) in the hills northwest of the train station. These vents of steam coming from the Earth are called "hells" because of their blistering temperature. Locally these are called 地獄谷 or Jigokudani, which literally means "hell valley". These are similar to the ones in Beppu, a slightly more well-known city where the "hells" are made into real tourist traps.
