Irori

A modern traditional fireplace, known as "irori". A hole in the floor accesses a sand surface that's safe to build a fire on. A kettle or pot would hang from the ceiling. Nowadays, an irori wouldn't be a hole in the floor, but rather a concrete box with clean sand, gravel, or ashes.
