A ramen restaurant is usually very small. You decide your meal from a ticket vending machine next to the entrance, and hand your ticket(s) to the staff. Then, you'll get your meal, usually in no time at all. The half-open kitchen simply saves space. The music playing was some J-pop - this is technically fast food, after all.
