The Middle Shrine (Chū-sha) is much grander, and is devoted to the ancient Japanese sun goddess, Amaterasu. Possibly also because of its proximity to modern infrastructure, and a series of eateries, it sees more visitors than the Upper Shrine. I reached this place from the Upper Shrine in about an hour's worth hiking.
